Do you know Hooters restaurants? They are reknowned for their sexy servers, with their small tank tops and tight shorts. You may wonder why I talk about them, because they obviously have nothing to do with weight problems. You are wrong.
Roseville restaurant, in Michigan is being served with a lawsuit by one of their employees. She says she was placed on a 30-day weight probation earlier this month : she was told to agree to lose weight or… lose her job.
That’s right. You will lose weight or you will lose your job. Cassandra Smith says she weigh 132 pounds, 13 pounds less than when she was recruited in 2008. If you take a look at this video, you will agree that she doesn’t look overweight at all.
I read and heard a lot of stories about very overweight people suffering from discrimination at job, like a women who had hard time doing simple office tasks. Her furnitures were just not adapted for her 350 pounds, and she was too shy to ask for a change. She was shy because she already felt discrimination about her size within colleagues.
I read and heard a lot of stories about very overweight people suffering from discrimination at work. But it is the first time I read something like this.
It’s a fact that Hooters’ servers have to maintain good physical condition and a nice overall look. It’s part of what Hooters’ clients are paying for. But I think they’ve been too far on that.
First, this woman is not fat. Second, if you, as a manager, think she doesn’t fitt anymore on servers’ staff, you must argue on why she doesn’t fitt anymore. Does she stills makes clients happy? Does she had bad clients reviews? Does she makes mistakes too often?
The fact is it is illegal to discriminate people on their appearance, religious beliefs or culture when hiring, probation or dismissing. Period.
With a case like this one, it’s not hard to believe that a majority of women were on strict diet at age 8 and then, as adults, still struggle with their body image.
